You've done the sensible thing. The skis, the buggy, the four suitcases for a long weekend... all bundled up top in a shiny roof box so everyone actually fits in the car. Smug. Organised. Ready.
And then you roll up to the airport, watch that yellow height barrier get closer and closer, and realise you've no idea whether your car's going to fit under it.
A roof box adds roughly 30–50cm to your car's height, taking a normal hatchback or SUV up to somewhere between 2.0 and 2.5m. Here's the bit that surprises people: it's not just multi-storeys you need to watch. Plenty of off-airport Park & Ride car parks have a barrier too - often 2.1m to 2.4m- so a tall car with a big box on top can still be turned away. Below is every parking product on our airport pages, with its maximum height and a source link for each figure, so you can book one you'll definitely clear.
The short version: a modest roof box (total height up to ~2.1m) fits almost anywhere except the ~2.0m multi-storeys and Meet & Greet (where your driver will need to enter a potentially height restricted airport zone). A tall car with a big box (2.2m+) needs one of the genuinely unrestricted car parks, or at least a car park with a suitable height limit.
How to read the height column
- Max Height (e.g. 2.4m) — the operator's stated maximum vehicle height. Measure your car with the box on, starting from the ground all the way up to the top of the box.
- No limit — the operator states no height restriction (open-air site).
- ~2.0m / terminal drop — Meet & Greet: your car is driven into the airport's own terminal/short-stay car park, so the airport's barrier height applies at drop-off.
Heights and availability can change. Every figure below links to its source; if you're going to rely on a height limit, always double check directly with the parking operator.
Manchester
Manchester's own terms apply a flat 2.0m limit to every multi-storey and Meet & Greet car park. The Park & Rides are far more generous.

Before you book: the 30-second checklist
- Measure the car with the box on - measure from the ground to the top of the box when mounted on your car.
- Add 5–10cm of breathing room over the stated limit.
- A big box (2.2m+ total)? Stick to the no-limit options.
- Double check the height limit directly with the parking operator - limits change!
Right, go and enjoy the trip
A roof box shouldn't be the thing standing between you and your holiday. Measure the car, pick a car park with headroom to spare, and you'll be through that barrier and off to departures without a scratch.
