Funny Ryanair X/Twitter replies

Ryanair has adopted a very unique marketing strategy over the last few years. The airline has turned the mantra of “the customer is always right” into “the customer is always the butt of the joke”. It’s a dangerous tactic, but they have handled it very well thus far. There are some detractors, of course, but for the most part, this troll marketing tactic is winning the respect of customers and social media users.

Ryanair’s Unique Marketing Strategy

Ryanair is no stranger to controversy. Earlier this year, the airline’s boss, Michael O’Leary, reacted to Finnair’s declaration that they would start weighing passengers by suggesting it was because they “have so few passengers they probably have to weigh them”. In 2012, the outspoken businessman tried to introduce standing berths on planes, effectively making planes look like overcrowded buses.

The boss isn’t the only one making headlines with his comments. In fact, if you see the words “Ryanair” and “controversial statements” in a newspaper headline, there’s a good chance it’s related to their X profile.

In 2022, the Irish-based airline poked fun at the England football squad following their exit from the World Cup, leading to calls for England fans to boycott the airline. And this is far from an isolated incident.

The 10 Best Ryanair X/Twitter Replies

Ryanair routinely mocks people who use X to express their grievances about the planes, prices, and service. These cutting comments often receive thousands of likes, shares, and replies, and there are some gems amongst them. These are the most notable that we found whilst trawling Ryanair’s X profile.

10. Bring Your Own Plane

In October 2023, ToldYouThusly snapped a picture of them boarding a Ryanair plane, commenting, “I will bring my own stairs next time”, with the Ryanair X team advising that they might want to bring their own plane, as well.

9. Standing Room Only

Self-derogatory humour goes down well with the British public. This tweet referenced the company’s focus on cramming as many seats on the plane as they can (which, admittedly, is considered to be a very eco-friendly strategy), with Ryanair then referencing the aforementioned 2012 push to include seating berths on planes.

8. Cross-Atlantic Food War

After a passenger posted an image of what appears to be pizza, spaghetti, seafood, and some unidentifiable gelatinous blobs with a caption suggesting the food was too complex for European tastes, Ryanair used the opportunity to mock American cuisine. We don’t even need to look at the replies to know that they will be filled with Brits and Americans arguing over who has the better cuisine, along with comments speculating as to what monstrosities are actually on the passenger’s plate.

7. Seat Only

The lack of a window seat comes up a few times in Ryanair’s X replies, but this is definitely one of our favourites, with the airline reminding them that they paid a very meagre sum for a seat, and little else. On the one hand, you'd expect a window if you booked a window seat, but for that price, who’s complaining?

6. Turkey Teeth

This comment came as a reply to an article from The Sun announcing the split of Katie Price and Carl Woods, with Ryanair making a cheeky comment about the “Turkey teeth” trend, whereby people fly to Turkey for cheap dental work.

5. Dating Dig

A comment about limited legroom turns into a sly catfishing dig! To be fair to the passenger, it doesn’t look like he has much room to manoeuvre.

4. Where Did the Legs Go?

The customer isn’t always the butt of the joke. In this amusing reply, we see Ryanair joking about a passenger’s super-effective camouflage trousers.

3. Emergency Trousers

Unsurprisingly, trousers and legs come up a few times in Ryanair’s replies, and this is one of the most notable, with the brand’s X team having a sly dig at a passenger’s choice of trousers. To rub salt into the passenger’s wounds, the post was viewed nearly 5 million times and received over 41,000 likes and 1,200+ reposts. Now everyone knows about his questionable fashion sense.

2. Movies Are the Best Companion

Lorna Finnegan seemed pretty frustrated with the fact that Ryanair had “separated” her from her travel companions, only for Ryanair to remind her that she will probably spend the flight watching movies on her phone anyway. Let’s be honest, we all do that, but if we’re sitting next to loved ones and not strangers, at least there will be no awkward small talk or unwanted interruptions.

1. More Turkey Teeth

Another starring role for Turkey and its latest export with Ryanair suggesting that a family pack of toothpaste would cost the same as a plane ticket to Turkey, where cheap dental care is abundant.

Summary: Ryanair’s Troll Marketing Techniques

Ryanair’s X posts and replies are clearly in jest, but they're not always taken that way. As noted above, there have been calls to boycott them in the past, although this could have just been some frustrated football fans venting their anger. If you search for the airline on user review sites, you'll also see some reviews that ignore everything about the airline’s service and focus purely on its social media activity.

For instance, a review left in September of last year on TripAdvisor begins, “I actually haven’t taken the flight”, before making it clear that the issue is with Ryanair’s X/Twitter activity, which the reviewer described as “embarrassing”.

Still, it’s a risk that Ryanair is clearly willing to take, and if the goal is to get more eyes on the brand and more engagements with its posts, it’s clearly working!
