Motorcycle and Bicycle Parking

London City Airport has free motorbike and pushbike parking. Head underneath the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) viaduct to find the free spaces. They are also signposted throughout the airport. If you ride to the main car park, you’ll end up paying the same price as everyone else, so be sure to seek out these spaces.

Blue Badge Parking

If you are a Blue Badge holder, you can park for free for up to 30 minutes in the main car park. Just make sure you take your badge to the information desk so they can validate your ticket.

Meet & Greet Parking

These services are often marketed toward business travellers, as they offer a no-fuss approach, but they are suitable for anyone who wants to make life easy for themselves.

You will arrange to meet a valet at a specific location, usually just outside of the terminal or wherever is the most convenient for you. They will take your keys and car and then drive it to a secure car park. You can go straight to the check-in desk and start your journey while they worry about finding a space.

On your return, give them a call and arrange to meet them. They will bring your car to you.

The exact instructions can vary by provider, so check with your chosen option before collecting your vehicle.

London City Airport Information

London City Airport first opened its doors in 1987. It is located just 6 miles from the City of London, putting it in a prime location and making it one of the most centrally-located airports in the country.

It is owned by a consortium that includes Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS), the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP), and the Kuwait Investment Authority.

It is a Focus City for British Airways and BA also operate the vast majority of the airport’s routes, taking passengers everywhere from Amsterdam to Zurich and many popular European destinations in between.

London City Airport is nowhere near as busy as Heathrow, Stansted, and Gatwick. In fact, as far as passenger numbers are concerned, it is eclipsed by all of its capital counterparts. However, it still handles over 5 million passengers a year, making it one of the 12 busiest airports in the UK and putting it on par with the likes of Newcastle Airport and Liverpool Airport.

In 2021, Edinburgh was the most popular route from London City Airport, carrying over 90,000 passengers. Amsterdam, Belfast, Glasgow, and Dublin were also very popular routes. During the winter, bookings increase sharply for Milan, Geneva, and Zurich as sports fans go in search of winter activities.

If you discount 2021 and 2022, when passenger numbers plummeted as a result of the pandemic, London City Airport seems to be getting busier. Only time will tell whether that actually comes to fruition and the numbers continue to climb.

There are no airport lounges at London City Airport right now. There are a few places to shop, eat, and drink though, so you have plenty of ways to kill time while you wait for your flight:

  • WHSmith: WHSmith is a strange phenomenon. You’ll find them before and after security in most airports. You can barely take a flight without passing at least 3 of them. And yet they’re always empty and no one uses them to purchase anything except sweets and bottled water. Still, on the off-chance that you didn’t bring a bunch of books and/or magazines from home, you can grab some here.
  • Aelia Duty Free: An after-security shop that sells a wide variety of duty free items, including alcohol and fragrances.
  • AeroSpa: A beauty chain that offers a number of luxury treatments, including manicures. Whether you’re getting a few treatments in before your holiday or just want to kill some time, it’s a great way to spend 30 minutes or so.
  • Boots: Fragrances, skincare, and other essentials. Boots is the perfect place to pick up OTC medications you need for the plane or your holiday. You will find locations both before and after security.
  • InMotion: Sells a selection of electronics that you might need for the plane or your holiday, including earbuds and headphones.
  • Pret A Manger: Sandwiches, snacks, and drinks. There is a wide assortment here and most of the food is prepared fresh.
  • Soul + Grain: Coffee, breakfast foods, and an array of sandwiches.
  • Cabin Bar: A relaxing place to grab a drink and a bite to eat.
  • Brick Lane Brews: Sells coffee, beer, and salt beer, among other things.
  • The City Bar: A bar that you’ll find after making it through security.
  • Caffe Nero: A coffee shop with a wide selection of sandwiches and cakes.
  • Drinking Water at LCY: A free place to top up a water bottle with fresh water. Just look for the refill stations after security.

LCY Drop Off/Pick Up Information

London City Airport has a dedicated pick-up zone across from the terminal. It costs £3.80 for stays of up to 10 minutes and £8.50 if you exceed 10 minutes. Beyond 20 minutes, you’ll pay the initial £8.50 plus £5 for every 5 minutes thereafter.

It can get very costly if you’re anticipating a lengthy drop-off or pick-up. In such cases, it’s best to move your car into the main on-site car park. You can swap your pick-up ticket for an on-site ticket at the desk in the terminal to avoid penalty fees.

If you are disabled and have a Blue Badge, or you’re picking up a passenger with a Blue Badge, you can park for free in the on-site car park and stay there for 30 minutes before the charges kick in. Just make sure you show your Blue Badge.

LCY EV Information

Despite being a relatively small airport, London City Airport has several options when it comes to electric vehicle charging. At the beginning of 2022, the airport launched its first electric charging station, geared toward helping its passengers and employees.

Initially, they installed three 50kW and four 22kW fast charging points. One of the former was designated for local black cab drivers while the others are offered to passengers, staff members, and minicab drivers.

The service is provided by BP Pulse and costs £0.30p per kWh, with payments made via the BP Pulse app or by credit card.

In the future, it’s likely that London City Airport will add more charging stations to its car parks. It’s one of the most sustainably focused airports in the United Kingdom and is constantly seeking ways to reduce its emissions and make its services more sustainable.
